A friend of mine introduced me to "cross processing" photos in Photoshop the other day. I guess this was all the rage inthe seventies. With film, you develop your negatives in slide chemicals. In Photoshop, you edit your RGB curves. It's so cool. Needless to say, now I am obsessed. Here are some of my attempts...

Spring Break was this past week. Cevin and I went to Oklahoma to visit his family there and we had a really good time. We went to the Arbuckle Wilderness while we were there, and we got a couple of pretty cool photos...

Here is my most recent Drawer Geeks Jr. submission. The theme this time is Ninja.

This is my concept for our newest 3D Illustration assignment. We're supposed to do 11x14 circus posters. I am not very satisfied with this concept. I think in the final I will change some of the textures. I'll be building the clown in Maya, but the rest with stay in Photoshop. I think I am going to try to find some cool font to use for the speech bubble.

Well, this has been a crazy week! Here some recent projects...

This is my most recent Drawer Geeks Jr entry. The theme was Jack and the Beanstalk. Check out all of the other entries here.

Above is some concept art for my 3D Illustration Independent Study. Andrew, Cevin, Jimi and I are doing the independent study together and we each get to choose a theme. Andrew chose this one, and its album art for the fictional band Jonah's Folly. We have to create the environment in Maya, and there has to be a whale. Our concepts were due today, and this is mine.

This is my first 10 Second Club for my Stop Motion Class. We have to make one a week. Last week we just had to introduce our character...so here he is!

Today is my 21st birthday, and it's a big deal for more than one reason. Cevin asked me to marry him today. We're engaged! He took me to the Forks of the Wabash to eat lunch, because it was warm and sunny here today. After we ate he gave me a wooden heart-shaped box and inside it was the ring, which is beautiful. It's ivory and Cevin made it himself. I'm pretty psyched!

Today we went to the Tsukiji Fish Market, and it was hands down one of the craziest experiences of my life. We left the house around 3:30am to go this thing, after which we almost got run over by millions of zooming fish salesmen on carts, among other things. Honestly, I can't possibly explain how bizarre it was with words, and it was too dark to get very many good photos. I'm hoping this photo of stuffed bear and petrified raccoon with say enough for me:

I'm leaving Japan in the morning. I can't really believe it. In some ways it seems like I just got here. I'll be getting on a bus at 9am Wed (7pm Tues for you Eastern Standard folks) beginning my journey home.

Jess and I had a nice day at Kichijoji today. We explored some shops and ate at some cool places. I only have a few days left in Japan! I can hardly believe it. Time flies.

We went to the Studio Ghibli museum today and it was amazing! I couldn't take any photos on the inside of the building, which is really too bad. It was one of the coolest museums I've ever been to. It was like an animator's dream. They had exhibits on the history and process of animation, and they were also showing a Ghibli short film that you can't see anywhere else. The town and park the museum is in were also really cool. All in all, I think its been one of my favorite days here so far.

Jess and I had fun at Disney Sea today! It wasn't crowded, and the weather was good. I think it was one of the best amusement park experiences I've had, definitely my favorite Disney theme park. Probably the best part was the Little Mermaid show. We weren't supposed to take photos, but I managed to sneak a couple. They aren't good, but you can get a taste for it. It was amazing!

Tonight we had dinner with some good friends of the Baumans, Mr. and Mrs. Shiraishi. It was delicious and a very good time. Tomorrow Jess and I are heading out to Disney Sea!

Today Jess and I went on an adventure around Tokyo. We saw a temple, a shrine, Tokyo Tower and lots of other things. We also spent quite a bit of time on the subway. It was a good day!

We had quite a day today in Yokohama. We took a day trip with some good friends of the Baumans. We took a tour of an old cruise ship, went to China Town, and went a huge mall. I also rode the train for the first time today, and had to make several transfers. It was fun, but my legs are super tired tonight from all the walking.

Today me and Jess did Karaoke! It was pretty funny. Karaoke places here are a little different from the ones I've seen in the US. Here you get your own little room to sing in. We sang a lot of Backstreet Boys and Disney stuff. Very fun.

Today is my last day in Karuizawa and I am sad. I have really enjoyed it here. Here is a view of Mt. Asama from nearby our cabin. Pretty beautiful, huh?

Last night we went out to eat in Karuizawa because it was Mr. and Mrs. Bauman's 20th anniversary in Japan. They moved here when Jess was just a year old. Pretty crazy. The restaurant we went to was a Yakiniku place, which I guess is where you cook your own food at your table. It was delcious! Definitely my favorite thing I've eaten so far. Luckily Yakiniku places are all over, so Jess says we go to another one later on. I am really loving this town we staying in, Karuizawa. I'm sure I'll have a lot more photos to post soon.

well here i am in japan! right now i am with the baumans and their friends the johnsons in a small touristy town called karuizawa. we are staying in cabin for the next couple of days over new years. today we went on a little walk in the town and i saw a few funny things...

also, there was a totoro store, which i was very very excited about...

Tonight I experienced a Christmas miracle. My family went up to Morgantown to see my brother and his wife. My mom had seen a news story about a crazy light display somewhere in Morgantown, so we decided to look for it before we went home. We found it, and it was the most amazing thing in the world. This one guy sets up all these lights in his yard and gets his neighbors to help, and you can walk through it and there is music playing, and it is really something. I wish you could all have been there.

My family is coming in tonight for early Christmas and I am excited! It's going to be a good weekend.

Also, it's just one week until I leave for Japan, which is really hard to believe. I have been watching Heroes to brush up on my Japanese, and so far I can say "I did it!!" and that's about it. Great show, though.

And some more exciting news. This week I was hired by Supply Solutions to take some photos to put up in their newly renovated offices. It was pretty exciting. I got to lay on the floor and take pictures of weird things that I don't understand. Check it out here.

The Owl Off is over.

We ended with a tie, 19-19. Although Cevin technically finished his 19th owl after we were done, so I think he should only get 18.5 and then I would win, but I guess I'll give it to him. More Frogs! We spent about 6 hours shooting frogs today.
The first place we tried to shoot was in a big pile of leaves. We didn't get to finish though, because some workers came along to munch up the leaves and almost drove over us with their truck. It was pretty frustrating. After that we got a few good things, so it turned out fine. But it's been a long day.

Check out these giant frogs! These frogs have consumed my life lately. It's a long and involved process to make these guys. Let me tell you. I painted them tonight and so I am finally done with the construction. This week my Animation 2 class is going to take our frogs out on campus and animate them jumping around. I'm real excited.

Look at these birds! Those are from a project Cevin and I are working on together for Motion Graphics. I am just sitting here in the lab waiting for Cevin to get done working, and so I messed with them a little in Photoshop.

Now check out this image: This is also for the Motion Graphics project. We are doing a thing with silhouettes, and we are planning on compositing together some footage of real hands with a 3D bird. The image above is the design for the bird. The hand in the picture is Grace, Cevin's sister. We went to Cevin's house for Fall Break this past weekend and Grace let us pixelate her hands for our project.

Look at this guy! He's from a project I'm working on right now for my After Effects class. We had to pick a company and do an animation of their logo, and I chose Kiva. So look for that project in the future. I'll probably post it on here when I finish.

This is the first project we had to do for Animation II. The assignment was to do a walk sequence with personality, and the character had to interact with something else in the scene. I chose to do a sort of top-toe sneak. I think it turned out all right. Not the greatest, but still not too bad.

Well, Labor Day is over and the long-anticipated Chicago trip has come and gone. Hard to believe. We had a really really good time with Christopher and Alice in the city, and we are really looking forward to going back again.

So now we are back, and I am already a little behind in school work. It's hard to be gone for a whole weekend here. So I've got to spend the next few days catching up.

Back at School

Well I'm back! Still transitioning. I am really happy to be back at school, but it's taking some time to get back in the swing of things. I forgot how different college life is than the rest of life. It's quite an adjustment. I guess I'll get it sorted out soon.

Before school started I was in Athens, OH with Cevin working on a photography project. We got to spend several evenings at The Timothy House, which is a really awesome homeless shelter there. We met some amazing people. We went over there around 5 for the evening meal, and stayed until around 9 every night. Everyone was so welcoming and open to letting us take photos. It was great. We were so glad we went.

Here are a couple of the photos that I took. Cevin got a lot of really great ones too.

Look at our new kittens! We got them a few weeks ago, but I hadn't taken a picture of them until recently. Aren't they cute? We named them Hugo and James, following a Lost theme. We already have a dog named Jack. Soon we are going to have animal reenactments of the show and charge an admission fee. This may be the key to our fortune.

I only have a little bit of time left in Clarksburg, and I'm filling it up by taking senior pictures for kids from church! Last week I took some senior pictures for ElizaBeth Hoskinson, and I am probably going to take a few more for her this week.
I have requests from a few more kids, and I am going to try to fit them in next week after I get back from Knoxville. Phew! I feel like my time is running out.

Well I have about two and a half more weeks left at home.
Next week the family is headed to Knoxville to see Christopher and Alice for the boys' birthday. I'm looking forward to that. Then, in two weeks Cevin is coming back to WV for a few days and then we are headed over to Athens, Ohio for a week. We have the opportunity to work with Good Works, Inc, an organization that works with the homeless and poor in rural Appalachia. You can check out their website here: www.good-works.net
We are going to be doing some photography and video work with them. I'm not sure exactly what all that entails, because I don't know exactly what all we will be doing, but I am pretty darn excited! After we leave Good Works I am going to spend a few days at Cevin's house in Hamilton, IN and then it'll be time to go back to school! I am really happy to be headed back to Huntington. And then, just when you thought things couldn't get better, a week after school starts we are riding the train to Chi-town to hang out with Christopher and Alice. Good times ahead, I am telling you.

For the time being, I am sitting here at my desk at Supply Solutions, like always. Grateful for the present, but looking expectantly to the future!

Summer Post!

Hello there faithful readers (Christopher)...
Here I am at my desk at Supply Solutions where I have been working for the past several weeks. I spend all day answering the phone with a cheery "Hi this is Supply Solutions. How can I help you?" and then transferring calls to much more worthy, hard-working people than myself. I'll be doing this for three or four more weeks, baby! That's what I am talking about.

Besides my job, which has been nice but a little boring, I took a trip with the fam to Florida last month to visit relatives. We stayed on the Weeki Wachi River, which was very exciting because it was full of giant manatees. We saw quite a few of them. Last week a few of my friends from school came to WV to hang out for a week. My roommate Darah came all the way down from Maine, and Jake and Cevin came over from Indiana. I decided to try to show them what West Virginia is really like, which mostly involved stuffing them full of pepperoni rolls. But we also went to Audra State Park and forged the river, then we went down to Smoke Hole Caverns and stayed in a cabin for a night. We hiked up Seneca Rocks, which was very fun and we spent a little time in Elkins, WV. Then last Friday Mom rented a pontoon boat and we went out on Stonewall Jackson Lake. Ron, Lisa, Eli and Beckah Williams came with us on that trip and it was really a good time. All in all a nice week. That's about everything going on here at the moment. I might have an opportunity to go do a photography project with Good Works, Inc. They are a non-profit working with the homeless in Athens, Ohio. I am pretty excited about that possibility, so we'll see if it works out.

I will be on the road home this time tomorrow.
I'm really ready for this semester to be over, and I feel like I need a change...but I really don't want to go home. I wish I did, but I've had to work so hard this year emotionally separating myself from home and now the prospect of being there all summer doesn't seem as nice as it used to. I wish I had made some plans, but that's ok. I'm sure it will go by fast, and it's a good time to stay close anyway, considering all the stuff going on with our family. I know it'll be all right, but right now I feel a little sad and restless.

School is so crazy right now! Still 3.5 weeks until finals and I am already staying up almost every night working on projects. My poor roommate stayed up until after 5 last night making a wire sculpture for her 3D design class, which was at 8 this morning.
On the bright side, the weather is getting warmer and it's been beautiful outside all week. Also I started interviewing kids for my Flash class, and it's been pretty funny so far. One little girl told me that her favorite animal was an elephant because they have the same last name as her. Her last name is Gray.

I am working on so many things right now, but I have very little to share with you! Let's see what I can scrounge up...
I haven't exported a nice enough version of my wind-up toy cat yet, and I can't seem to make movie files out of my flash stuff so you can't see any of that.
I do have this sand animation, which is pretty neat. I worked with another kid in my Animation 1 class on this. It's not really very good, but I learned a whole lot about sand. Check it out.

Also I am working on a two minute pixelated film for my Intro to Editing class. Cameron was here last week and we shot the whole thing in a few hours. I haven't started editing it much yet, but I have messed with the pictures a little bit. Here's one for you to see...

This is my favorite frame so far. There are about 1200 pictures in this thing. Can you believe it?

I'm pretty sure you're the only person who checks this, and you've asked me to update my blog so I will.
As you know, I've been on Spring Break this week. My good friend Jess came home with me. She's from Japan, so she couldn't go home for break. We hung out in Clarksburg and Morgantown at the beginning of the week. We got to see Cameron as Jesus in the Passion play at Chestnut Ridge Church. Midweek we traveled to Cowen, WV and met up with you where you were checking in on the dining hall construction. We rode with you to Knoxville, and then Alice took us to Nashville. On Thursday we visited Belmont, where Jess is thinking about transferring. We had a nice time on the campus there. Afterwards we ate dinner with Alice and her family which was also very nice. That night we came back to Knoxville and the rest of the family minus Cameron and Sarah joined us. Friday we worked on your house until evening, and then we went to Senor Taco where Duncan got a pie in the face for his birthday. Hilarious. Yesterday Jess's friends from Chattanooga came up to visit and we hung out on Market Square for the afternoon. After they left we met up with you and the rest of the family at your house and then went to the Tomato Head for Dunc's birthday dinner. Today is Easter and we went to your church this morning which I liked a lot. Now we're all relaxing, and the family is getting ready to leave. Cameron and Sarah will be up tonight, and tomorrow Jess and I will head back to Huntington.

Here's a glimpse into my life: Right now I am sitting in the computer lab at Becker Hall waiting for my wind-up toy animation to finish rendering. I started rendering that little guy around midnight last night and it still has 15 frames to go! After it renders I have to add sound in final cut, and then it will finally be done at which point I will post it on here for you to enjoy.

UPDATE: Got the mandolin on Thursday and I am truly terrible. BUT I can sort of play 4 chords and that's something, right? My fingers are mutilated from playing, so I hope it's worth it.
I made a "photo object" animation for class last night, so I'll put that up soon. Don't get your hopes up though because it's not too good.

This is a wind-up toy that I am building in my 3D Character Design class. It's a giant cat who can't reach his food bowl. His tail is the wind-up key, which you can't see because it's around back.

This is the first render of the model.

Here are my first two walk cycles. We did these last week in Animation 1. The first one is a little funky, but I think the second one turned out all right.

I ordered a mandolin yesterday! I got it from ebay so I hope it's not super crappy. The guy who was selling it had a recording on the listing so I could hear what it sounded like. So I think it's all right. I don't know very much about mandolins though. I hope I can learn to play it...

It's called Usavich, and we've been watching it in my 3D Computer Animation class. This is volume 5 and it's my favorite, but there are at least 20 more. You can watch them all on YouTube.

Spring semester started this week and I have already seen more animated shorts than I can remember. Here's a cool one called 'Walking' by Ryan Larkin.

I actually made a hand-drawn animation this week! It's pretty sweet. I'll put it on here as soon as I can.

Just listened to Sufjan's Illinoise album all the way through for probably the first time. I didn't have the whole album until recently and didn't know what I was missing. I usually just buy song or two here or there and don't worry about the whole album, but sometimes that just doesn't cut it.

Saw Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium at the dollar theatre earlier this week. It wasn't as terrible as I was expecting. Still, it was a disappointing coming from the writer of Stranger than Fiction. Luckily it was charming enough to make up for a lot of its flaws, mostly thanks to Dustin Hoffman. It's too bad, because I think with a few changes to the screenplay it could have been really great.

Sorry I don't have any videos to post. It's J-Term right now and I am taking a crazy miming class so we're not really watching anything cool.
I did get the Juno soundtrack yesterday and I recommend it. I especially like the song "All I Want is You" from the opening credits. I thought the movie was a little disappointing, but I really like the music.
I saw Dan in Real Life at the dollar theatre yesterday with my roommate and I thought it was pretty good. That's about all that's going on here in Huntington. J-Term is a little boring. I've got a lot of time on my hands.

I'm back at school after Christmas Break. Just got in tonight around 10. I'm feeling a little blue. I didn't expect to miss home too much, but I do. It's hard to have two lives like this. I'm constantly readjusting.

Cameron and Sarah and I were in TN with Alice and Christopher for New Years. We had a great time. On the way back to WV we entertained ourselves by screaming our lungs out. Then we came home and made a video of it.

Sorry about the lag between posts. I had to maintain two separate blogs for my DMA classes and so this one got shoved aside for a bit. The semester is over now though, and I am home for break, so hopefully I can get back in the habit.

Tuesday in Intro to DMA we talked about the beginnings of animation and early animators. My favorite was Len Lye, a guy from New Zealand who did some pretty amazing stuff way back in day.

Watch this bank commercial by Len Lye, and then compare it to the iTunes commercial below...

Pretty incredible, right? Len Lye made Rainbow Dance in 1936! Unbelievable.
